More often than not, software developers will work on existing code bases rather than new projects. On top of that, it seems that the overall experience with existing code bases (brownfield application) is one of frustration and limitations. This training course will empower the attendees to embrace brownfield projects and to make the most of them.
Topics Covered
· Defining Brownfield
· Figuring out where you’re at
o Reviewing existing defects
o Reviewing the code
o Learning from any existing tests
o Guidance from the build process
· Technical Tools and Techniques
o Refactoring techniques
o Effectively working in Isolation
o Layering vs. Tiering
o OO Fundamentals to build with
o Removing the shackles of Coupling
o Benefiting from other frameworks
o Achieving the ‘abilities’
o Working with external dependencies
o Getting the right tools for the team
· Keeping the momentum
o Convincing the team
o What order should I work in?

Attendee Take-aways
· Identify and act on negative influences in the technical realm of a project
· Identify possible solutions for problems with process and code on a project
· Influence a project in ways that will help it to deliver to the client more successfully
· Implement recognized good software development practices which focus on effective and efficient delivery of projects
· Incrementally implement improvements without harming or impeding the current project pace or goals
This course will not teach attendees how to be a programmer on the .Net platform. Attendees will need to have a foundation of experience using .Net and overall software development. The course will build on that foundation of current skills and send the attendee away with a new appreciation for how software development, brownfield or not, can be done with confidence.
This course is a very intensive one. Each morning the session will start at 8am and the attendees will determine when it will end. If they wish to work through the night, that is what will happen. If they choose to leave at 5pm, then they are free to do so. Attendees will get from the course what they dedicate to it in time. As a result, attendees should plan on not being available to work during the duration of the course. Hot lunch will be provided along with morning coffee and juice.
Each attendee will be responsible for providing their own laptop or PC for the duration of the course. Attendees will receive a personal license of ReSharper and a copy of the Brownfield Application Development book.
